The Wizard and I

To celebrate our big birthdays (I won't reveal how old) my daughter invite us to New York city for four days, watch US Tennis Open during the day and broadway show at night. It was great.

Vasquez Rock

I went with my hiking group on a day trip this spring. Our last destination  is Vasquez Rock Nature Park in the high dessert near Agua Dulce Spring, ca. It has spectacular rock and stone formation. I painted this from the picture I took.

Pink Poppy

One summer we went to my friend's beach house in Sequim, WA to catch some Dungense crabs and digging clams. While others were hard working digging clams, I discovered this poppy at the back of her house. They are more like roses with multiple layers of pedal, pretty to look at but hard to paint.

A Study

I went to the CCAA painting group and did this of a live model. This is my third study in this monthly painting group. I have overcome my anxiety this time and concentrate on drawing, mixing color and painting all in three hours. I have much to learn but I enjoy the session.

Peach Blossom II

This is the second floral painting study after I received several valuable critiques from my friends on the first 'peach blossom'. I'm beginning to like the smoothness surface of the Richeson panel and painting with wet paint mixed with medium which gives me a lot freedom in moving the paint. This is a good experience.

Waiting at the Ballard Lock

 While I was in Seattle last summer, we visited the Ballard Lock which links between the salt water of Puget Sound to the ship canal and lakes. People are waiting for the water level be adjusted to allow all kinds of boats to pass.

Red reflection

Watching my artist friend Martha Cowan paints this red glass for her demonstration oil painting at the Associated Artist Association monthly meeting last week, I was inspired by her skill and insight and can't wait to go back and paint. I borrow this glass from her and did this version.

Goodbye Kitty

Kitty the cat belongs to my daughter in Seattle . This is the last picture I took before my daughter moved to Singapore this summer and Kitty was adopted by a good family. I was quite emotional while painting this from the picture.

Cowboy in canyon

I did this painting on the same cowboy post with a canyon background. It seems creates a different feeling. Some of my Underground painting group artists like the other one better. You be the judge.

Lonesome in woods

 Cowboy is a subject I love to paint. I have pondered for a while on how to show the lonelyness. My friend artist Martha suggested to put a tree as background. So here it is.

Orange Slices

I officially become a member of the 'Underground Artists', a group of artists gathered and paint on every Wednesday evening. One evening I brought a juicy orange to paint and Martha suggested to slice the orange. I did this painting before we ate those orange slices.

Do I see fruit

Try to decide what to paint among all the fruits in my frig. My daughter's sunglasses reflect them all. That's what I will paint.
This painting is extremely similar to one of Carol Marin's painting.

Year of Dragon

Chinese Money God symbolizes prosperity and good life. On new year's day it is customary for each family to wellcome the Money God to his household by hanging his picture on the gate. My aunt found this little ceramic figure in a shop in China and gave it to me. It is just in time to celebrate the Year of Dragon, Jan 23rd, 2012.

Singing Bird at Balboa Island

Three palm trees at Balboa

A plein air painting day with four artist frineds at Balboa Island. What a beautiful day with temp in the 80's. This is my first time here and really enjoy the scenery. I still felt rushed in setting up for painting as usual and nothing was in order. The first painting didn't turn out satifying. In the afternoon I felt more relaxed and sitting under a shade. Looking at these three palm trees gives me an urge to paint them.

Dancing Horse

Most off my photo on horses were taken in Sequim, Washington a retirement community. Those horses were either eating grass or stand still, rarely have any action. I decide to paint one with action, creating from the many references pictures on horses.

Bright cat

After a couple months' absence from my blog, now I am back painting like mad. One reason is the AAIE annual show is coming and I haven't had anything to show. The main reason is my uncle who has been in bad health condition has miracleous recovered. I choose these bright color for this painting to show my emotion of happiness and relief.

Redland Old Truck

My art friend, a graduate of U. Redland took me and another artist to the Citrus Festival in Redland last Saturday. After visiting the beautiful campus we were in the mist of orange grove celebrating the citrus festival of Redland with live muscis and tasting oranges. We set up our spot in front of this old trunk loaded with orange crates. This is the 2nd painting of this truck after I got back. (The first one has been scrapped.)

All My Children

When I was in Sequim, WA. last year I stopped by a little family farm selling fruits and flowers. It was a pleasant surprise to find this mother hen guarding her chicks in the corner. I really touched by the scene and this painting came out satifactory.

Apple squared

After watching the demo by Karen Werner at the Inland Empire Art Association March meeting, I decided to try it; painting small still life and concentrate on color and brush stroke. It made me to slow down and really thinking about the color on each stroke.

Between you and me

Senior citizens of Na Xi minority group in Li Jiang, China usually come outside and enjoy the afternoon sun. They all dressed in their costume and this scene attracts a lot of the tourists around the world. Unfortunately I was there on a rainy day and miss the scene. The painting was done from a photo.

Semi Retired

This antique car sitting at the farm right across from where we stayed in Sequim, Washington. Other than the head light on the left, it seems in perfect condition.

this was painted from a photo. I had some problem of showing the light and shadow based on the veridian green. My artist friend gave me some tips without seeing the photo. So here it is.
